Moving In

1st September 2012

So - I'm back at St Andrews university, up in the beautiful countryside of East Scotland. I arrived yesterday shortly after five o'clock, and began my search for the keys to my flat! My flat mate is currently absent on holiday, and had left my keys with a friend, and after some trailing round the quaint little streets of St Andrew's, I found them!

I would have caught the train up, but what with needing quite a lot of luggage, I doubt the train attendants would have been too happy - and so my parents came along and brought everything up for me. I'm happy with the flat, I think it'll suit the purposes of my second year just fine. I have a lovely room, particularly now that it's decorated to my liking. No doubt I shall spending hours upon end at this desk, studying (or it is more probable that I shall be procrastinating on Facebook).

There was a bit of a dilemma this morning. I was testing the key out on the courtyard door, where the bins are kept, and turned it in the lock, and it just crumbled. Honestly, I didn't even exert any force upon it, and it just bent and died. I was stunned. So now I have no access to the security door. I have my flat key - at least that's something, but it's just my luck that the key would break! Alas, the problem is hopefully going to be fixed in the next few days. My dad and I went to the key cutter's,  but because it's a special batch or something it's protected and so it's illegal for them to make copies without the consent of the makers, and even then they would have to send away for it to be copied. Typical! So, we got in touch with the landlady and she said she'll send a spare key in the post - just as well they have a spare. I sincerely hope she will send it registered post. God knows what I'll do if it gets lost along the way!

I ventured around the flats also in my building, and met two nice girls in the flat two floors above me. They're American, very pleasant and willing to help me with my key dilemma! When I get more settled in, hopefully I'll be able to invite them down for a cup of tea or something.

So I'm pretty glad right now that I decided to come up early before term officially starts. I wanted to do so in order to get properly acquainted with the appliances in the house - this process of trial and error is officially rather sensitive - I've already burnt some toast. So the silver lining on the edge of this bleak, black cloud is that I do actually have time to spare to get these kinds of things sorted out.

My parents have left now - typical teary goodbyes were made - I was fine but when my mum cries, it sets me off. I went for a bath anyway to feel better - which I do now, and the plan for this evening is to make myself a chicken korma, and settle down with a film and catch up on some episodes of New Girl.

I'm also reading up on some material for a Classics module I'm taking this semester. I'm quite looking forward to it - I shall hopefully be studying texts like Plato's Five Dialogues and Aeschlus' trilogy, Oresteia. After my tragic mishap with learning New Testament Greek last year, hopefully this extra module to make up the credits will be more of a success. I'll keep you posted!
