Words of wisdom or morphemes of madness?
To finally be back in St Andrews, picking up my intellectual pursuits once again is exciting. Even though term hasn't even begun yet, I've already engaged in conversation with some wonderful people, who are enthralling and already oiling the cogs of my mind, which have been so inactive these last three months.
The atmosphere of student life - to be thrown together into a situation where nobody knows each other; yet within an hour (fuelled hilariously with alcohol) you are practically best friends is a wonderful feeling. It's something which I'm proud such a small community like St Andrews is able to offer. Seeing people you know within just minutes of stepping out your quaint town flat is a wonderful opportunity (or I suppose, depending on the night you've endured before, a horrid curse!)
I am inspired by these wonderful people around me fulfilling their aspirations in life, engaging with the things that interest them, and challenging the things that they feel threatened by, or wish to change. It makes me feel inspired to able to pick up my own interests with wonderment and an eager curiosity and vivacity that has lain dormant for a while. No matter how good your lecturers are, or your tutorial discussions, some of the most interesting and motivational conversations I have had are with student - like-minded and otherwise who are eager to make a change in the world, and inspired with an eagerness for life and its exciting prospects. Sometimes the best teachers are not those who are trained to teach, but those who are simply living life and understanding its value - simply souls like you or I.
No matter how corny this post sounds, or how pretentious you might consider my posts to be, I hope whether you are a student, either of life, or in an academic discipline, I hope you have the courage and motivation to fulfill your aspirations in life and be bold enough to do so.
In my writing, both academic and recreational, I wish to inspire people. I would love for someone to pick up my writing and feel a warmth and a comfort in knowing that writing isn't something that anyone can perfect, it's simply a working discipline, a gift of the mind, a work in progress. A creation of man. We're naturally imperfect, and so should our creations be.
Never feel belittled by anyone - express your opinions, validate them, yet do so humbly, for another person may be inspired by your humble attitude towards life. Your wisdom can inspire so many people if you use it wisely, and to the best of your ability.
Now, after a night abundant in alcohol, laughter and good chat, and a necessity for sleep, I bid you goodnight, for tomorrow the man who is coming to install a new boiler in my flat will no doubt be greeted with a hungover Steph, and that, my friends is most certainly not a pretty sight!
